Ugh, this was a trick question. Burr was his running mate in the election of 1800. They beat Adams/Pinkney but Jefferson and Burr tied, so in Feb. 1801 the House broke the tie. Also part of the reason Burr shot Hamilton. Hamilton swayed a couple members of the House saying how much of an asshole Burr was. Those people voted for Jefferson instead, so Burr lost and became VP.
